I wont lie, whilst writing this article I am wearing a jumper with Micky Mouse wearing a christmas hat on it, and I’m wearing a christmas hat too. It certainly is the most wonderful time of the year (foreshadow?) for me!
I love Christmas. Anybody who knows me well will know that lurking in my cupboard is a father Christmas costume that I bought about three years ago for, at the time, no apparent reason. Since then, I like to think I’ve really taken advantage of it:
Christmas will always be a big part of me, and I think anybody that doesn’t enjoy it has either died, or is in need of some serious cheering up. It’s alright- uncle Glenn is here to save you from your mishaps and perhaps misguided views on this joyous occasion with my top 5 favourite jingles to jitterbug to come this December.
Slade – Merry Christmas Everybody
Let’s just get this one over and done with. This song is the ultimate nostalgia enhancer for anybodies Christmas. Noddy Holder and his band of Irishmen certainly made quite the timeless classic and has probably made them some of the richest musicians to date. Imagine the royalties that are shared every year. Paid yearly for writing one Christmas song? That is one job I certainly would love.
Andy Williams – The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Admittedly, I never used to fully enjoy this song, but during my Christmas temp job (see the above photo) this was one of the four songs they would play by the ice rink. Eventually I learnt all the words and now I love it. As does my grand-mother. Rest in peace Andy Williams, a true blow to the stomach of 50‘s music.
Wizzard – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday
Who doesn’t love this song? Whether or not you’re sick of christmas, this is certainly one that will make even the elderly get up and swing their hips to. Definitely a favourite of mine and my sisters.
The Pogues & Kirsty McColl – Fairytale of New York
This, I believe, is another Christmas song that everybody is sick of by now. This was another of the four songs that was played in the airwaves at my christmas temp job. It took me a while, but now I am back in love with it. I dare you to listen to this monstrous tune without chanting along to the chorus.
Bandaid – Do They Know it’s Christmas Time?
This song had everything – Christmasy melodies, all the 80’s pop artists you could ever want and of course a brilliant message to the world. If anything, it’ll get you jolly and singing within seconds of it being played.
Now that you know how to get excited for Christmas, get your mince pies, your mulled wine, your Santa hats… and just go nuts. Have a fantastic one readers!
