Second only to New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day has more of an overwhelming amount of hype and pressure around it than any other holiday. Do you wear red? Do you steer clear of red because that’s corny? What’s with all the balloons? And how that about the restaurant, have you seen those prices? Not to mention the added pressure of someone actually asking you to be their valentine.
It’s one of those holiday’s that just has disaster written all over it, especially if you are going out with someone for the first time. It adds extra meaning to something that you may just want to be casual, or it can freak someone out who has every intention of perusing a relationship. Let’s face it, a first date on Valentine’s Day can be pretty awkward. So, here are a few reasons to skip the Valentine’s Day first date.
Someone chooses Dinner for you
If you choose to go out to a restaurant on V-Day, chances are your meal is chosen for you before you already get there. Most restaurants stick to a 3 or 4 course, pre-fixed menu. This could be a problem if you are a vegetarian, gluten free, kosher, whatever it may be. Having to deal with this on a first date is awkward enough without the added pressure of it being national “bring me roses and chocolates” day. Not to mention the prices are generally extortionate.
Furthermore, there’s nothing more awkward than being on your first date with someone while the girl in the next booth is being proposed to.
Um, more wine. Please?
It expedites the status of your relationship
Get ready for a chorus of “you two went out on Valentine’s Day? He/she must really like you!”. And hey, maybe they do. And maybe you really like them back. But shouldn’t that be considered at your own pace without the mandolin player awkwardly making his way over to your table?
To gift, or not to gift?
Since it’s technically a holiday, do you exchange presents? It’s a difficult decision to make. Since its Valentine’s Day, do you get him a little something? Do you have to buy her flowers? It’s a first date, how would you even know what to get the person? But then again, you don’t want to show up empty handed. It’s more questions that leads to more sweating and less fun.
The goodnight kiss
Some people don’t kiss on the first date, I didn’t always. It completely depends on the situation. But once again, Valentine’s Day adds that extra tension of kissing at the end of the night.
Where do we go from here?
How do you top Valentine’s Day?
Now that you’ve gone out on V-Day for your first date, where does that leave you?
It’s kind of like having dessert before the meal. Would you feel uneasy about meeting up the next weekend at a local dive bar after being served foie gras, and wearing your best shoes the weekend before? I feel like it’s doing things backwards.
Conclusion: Perhaps not sharing a box of Thorntons and staying at home for a Green Wing marathon is the way to go this Feb 14th.
