For the last few years a craze has been sweeping the healthy living world, everyone has been going crazy for green smoothies. They may look a bit funky, but they are popular amongst health gurus for good reason:
1. They make leafy green vegetables actually taste good
If you aren’t the biggest fan of chowing down on a bowl of steamed kale or spinach, green smoothies allow you to get those super healthy greens into your diet without wanting to hurl. Green smoothies are basically a leafy green veg blended with fruit and other ingredients such as milk (bonus points for using almond or coconut milk), protein powder and super foods. By blending the greens with sweet tasting fruit, you get the benefit of the nutrients in a sweet tasting drink.
2. They are packed with nutrients
Green veggies are some of the most nutrient packed foods on the planet. Kale has more per calorie than milk as well as being an excellent source of iron, beta carotene (which converts to vitamin A) and vitamin C. Spinach and spring greens have similar nutrient dense profiles.
3. They can help you lose weight
Green veggies are low in calories yet high in nutrients, this makes them excellent for weight loss. If you are a volume eater, i.e. you like decent portion sizes, green smoothies are brilliant because you can make them huge and depending on the other ingredients they’ll still be relatively low in calories. As green smoothies are blended, the nutrients are more easily assimilated and they are easy on the digestion too.
4. They can help to reduce cravings for less healthy foods
If you crave ice cream try making a green smoothie with a handful of spinach, 1/2 frozen banana, some frozen cherries and a spoonful of cocoa powder. Add just enough milk to allow it to blend and eat thick from a bowl. I swear it tastes like ice cream. Plus you can add toppings!
5. You can enjoy the look on people’s faces when you drink them
Some of the things I’ve heard while I’ve been drinking a green smoothie include ‘urgh what the fuck is that’, ‘that looks like pond water’ (usually when I add berries to the mix) and my personal fave, ‘you’ll turn into Fiona from Shrek if you keep drinking those.’ It’s worth making them and taking them to work just to create a talking point in the office.
To make a really simple green smoothie that tastes good, blend 1 handful of spinach with a banana and almond milk. If you want to take it to another level add some peanut butter! Start with spinach which is a milder green before experimenting with kale. Then get creative, you can add all sorts of ingredients to green smoothies to maximise their health benefits and make them taste amazing.
Have you tried a green smoothie? If not have I convinced you to give them a go?
