I’m not a huge fan of setting new year’s resolutions, but this year I’ve committed to one – being a kinder human. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’m an awful person, and I hope that most people would say I’m actually pretty nice most of the time. But if I’m honest, I also know that sometimes I can get caught up in the chaos of my own life and forget to actually do all of the lovely things I think about in my head.
I really want to change that in 2017. Generous acts of kindness from wonderful people have helped me get through a very difficult couple of months and now it’s time for me to pay that back. Because that’s the beauty of being kind, isn’t it? It multiplies as soon as you put it out into the world.
So if you too want to be a little bit nicer this year, here are 5 ways you can spread a little bit of kindness:
1. Send someone a card or letter
How amazing is it when you get post that isn’t a bill? It makes me SO happy to receive a proper, hand written card or letter in the post, and yet I never think to sit down and write them to other people. It doesn’t have to take any longer than sending a Whatsapp message but it could really make someone’s day when they receive it.
2. Buy someone a coffee
A really easy task that doesn’t have to cost more than a couple of quid! Whether you buy an extra coffee for a homeless person or surprise your stressed out friend with a latte and a brownie, it’s a super simple way to bring a smile to someone’s face.
3. Be patient on your commute
I don’t know about you, but I usually spend most of my commute to work being a bit (a lot) grumpy and I’m always in a rush. A simple way I’m planning on being a kinder human is to be more patient on those journeys – slowing down to let someone out won’t cost me more than a couple of seconds of my time, but might make someone else’s start to the day a little bit easier. Ditto with smiling at people on public transport.
4. Tell someone they’re doing a great job
Whether it’s the barista who gave you totally fantastic service or a colleague who is pulling out all the stops to land that stressful project, telling someone that they’re doing a great job is a fab way to spread a bit of kindness. It’s something that we’re not told enough, and I’m guaranteed it will make the person smile.
5. Get baking
I think there’s something about taking the time to bake something for someone that is really lovely. I’m terrible at it but even I can manage a decent brownie. I love how happy it makes my colleagues or family or other half when I make them for them. Whip up a batch of something sweet, and spread a little office cheer.
